{"id":40,"date":"2025-02-13T21:05:52","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T21:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coexistential.net\/?p=40"},"modified":"2025-02-13T22:31:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T22:31:50","slug":"what-is-authoritarianism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coexistential.net\/index.php\/2025\/02\/13\/what-is-authoritarianism\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Authoritarianism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the introduction to Bob Altemeyer\u2019s book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theauthoritarians.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Authoritarians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (available as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theauthoritarians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TheAuthoritarians.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDF <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theauthoritarians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TheAuthoritarians-Updated.epub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ePub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for free), he starts a brief discussion of what authoritarianism is, as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAuthoritarianism is something authoritarian followers and authoritarian leaders cook up between themselves.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authoritarianism is a kind of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folie \u00e0 deux (French: madness for two<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but instead of a one-to-one relationship, it is a one-to-many relationship, and rather than an induced psychosis it\u2019s more like mass hypnosis, one where the <em>inducer<\/em> relies upon the <em>recipients<\/em> to be psychological authoritarians. In the above quote, however, Altemeyer is talking more about authoritarianism in the political sense rather than the psychological.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One problem with the use of the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authoritarianism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the political media, is that it fails to take into account the gulf of difference between what an authoritarian leader is and what an authoritarian follower is (more from Bob on that later, but see also Tim Snyder\u2019s term <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oOjJtEkKMX4&amp;list=PLhZxrogyToZtDGDCKyjV6_H7Nkp5VTtUi&amp;index=4\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sadopopulism<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). All too often <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authoritarian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used interchangeably with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autocratic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, while all authoritarian regimes are autocratic, so are some <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monarchies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or Tsarist Russia)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Similarly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fascist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authoritarian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often used interchangeably. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fascism#:~:text=Fascist%20leaders%20often%20maintain%20a,to%20remain%20passive%20and%20demobilized.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discusses the difference as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFascist leaders often maintain a cult of personality and seek to generate enthusiasm for the regime by rallying massive crowds. This contrasts with authoritarian governments, which also centralize power and suppress dissent, but want their subjects to remain passive and demobilized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an overlap, of course, and we are witnessing a fascist\/authoritarian overlap right now. A cult of personality, with a subset of the electorate continuing to be enthusiastic followers. Those followers, especially those recently released from prison, can, with a show of force, keep the rest of the \u201csubjects\u2026 passive and demobilized.\u201d Indeed, it is usually the followers that engage in brutality. Often because they think it\u2019s what the leader wants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many higher-ups in the Nazi party and the various arms of the SS encouraged their underlings to use their initiative to further the cause. This has benefits for the regime. Firstly, untethered from consequence, underlings try out new approaches to the well-understood goals of the regime, and this can lead to novel solutions to the problems the regime faces. As Bob Altemeyer points out:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know an awful lot about authoritarian followers. \u2026 We have a pretty good idea of who they are, where they come from, and what makes them tick \u2026 we know little about authoritarian leaders because we only recently started studying them. That may seem strange, but how hard is it to figure out why someone would like to have massive amounts of power?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the authoritarian follower we\u2019ll be discussing over the coming weeks and months, as I dive into The Authoritarians again.
